We got our house last spring and have been doing room by room. The picture above is a similar one to the one we own that we found on Trulia. We came into it thinking it would be super pricey to remodel the downstairs bathroom. The tile was gross and stained, the wallpaper (yes, in the bathroom) was caked on and the drywall behind it crumbling.
There was mold peeking through the grout in the shower. The sink was old and needed to be taken out completely. The fan hadn’t been cleaned in years. There was no outlet in the bathroom because they replaced the outlet with a fan switch for the inspection but then didn’t put an outlet in at all.
It took a few months we made some serious progress. Got a new shell and installed it pretty easily. Got new tile that was to our liking. Ripped down all the wallpaper painstakingly, and painted it a fresh green color that we both loved. We did it on the weekends mostly because we both work. We thought of having it done by someone but it would have cost a fortune. Now it’s all our own.
Getting a new house that you can mold yourself is way better than getting one that is already set. Plus you pay less! The fans got replaced and we ended up just getting a new switch plate and fixing the wiring so we could have the fan and the outlet. Amazing how not having an outlet in a room is just so annoying.
Almost forgot to mention the old paneling we had to take out of there! That was at the bottom, towards the floor. All these 70’s interior designers should be arrested and tried for war crimes! All in all it turned out great and we couldn’t be happier. But we still have a lot to do in the house.
The master bedroom is next on the list and I can’t wait to get started! We are looking for an interesting design feature to include in there and are strongly considering using limestone at the counter for the coffee station. Yes, we are putting a small coffee bar in the bedroom, we love it that much. 🙂
