The house above is my dream (source), but in the mean time I purchased a cute little one bedroom home in Long Beach California. It was one of the those old maid houses that was set behind the main larger house. It was bright yellow and it kind of looks like a little doll house; it is surrounded by a beautiful garden, that I love working in and the house is located in one of the first planned neighborhoods in Long Beach.
It was built sometime in the very easy 1900’s, it’s so cute in inside, with all the very detailed crown molding, original but redone hardwood floors, fireplace, one of this old floor heaters, the kind you have to turn on with a long metal pole to turn the nozzle. It even still has the old ice box the was reachable from the outside, so the iceman and the milk man could get to it, in those days where there was milk and ice delivered.
With all the built in’s and beautiful tiled kitchen counters and bathrooms tiles. The house was almost perfect but the bedroom was really tiny and the main living area was quite large, so I decided to make it one big living area, and I also want to remodel the bathroom; I just wanted to replace the tub, the tub it had was of a later time era and I wanted to replace it with one of those claw feet tubs, the one that’s placed off the floor.
I also wanted to replace the sink with a vintage pedestal sink that I had found at United House Wrecking in Connecticut. And I also wanted a low flow toilet to be more environmentally friendly.
Going into the remodeling I felt really positive. I helped my mother remodel our home as a teen, so I felt very confident that I could do most of the remodeling myself. I had a friend come in before I started knocking down walls, to make sure it was safe to proceed, I didn’t want to end up hitting a pipe or knocking down a wall that was holding up my roof; once I had the green light I started sledgehammering away. I knocked down one whole walls and demolished a closet, because there was a large closet already in the living room.
It was a fairly easy and a straightforward process and I got it all done in one weekend. I felt really proud of myself, and the space looks so much better and open, a lot more lighter and bright, felt good, felt powerful. Then for the bathroom, me and my friend replaced the tub and the toilet, but I did the sink myself. I re-sanded and re-polished some areas of the floor where the closet and wall was removed.
I also decided to do a bright turquoise backless behind the counter where the stove was, to add some color, I replaced the stove and refrigerator, with stainless steel, and paint a couple walls, again to add color.
I had a bit of help but all in all I did most of the work myself and being a women and single I felt really proud of myself; I wasn’t afraid to tackle the job, a relatively small remodeling job compared to others, but my first, of my very first home, and I absolutely love it.
Everything took a bit over a month to accomplished, and yeah there was some dust and some inconvenience, but it was pretty much stress free, and now I can enjoy my little dollhouse home.
