Virginia Lime Works is committed to providing the best mortars for historic preservation, new construction and ecologically friendly building. We offer both basic mortar analysis, for clients with an interest in the original design of their mortar, custom mortar replication, and custom colored mortars.

Virginia Lime Works offers a Basic Mortar Analysis Service, which involves acid digestion, analysis of aggregates and additives, report with information on sand gradation, and replicated mortar using Virginia Lime Works products.
The mortar analysis service includes:

A description of the original mix composition including information on the proportions of lime, aggregates, and other additives
A sample of replicated mortar, ready for installation
Evaluation of aggregates for use within a lime mortar

Analysis Reports can be sent by UPS (with replicated mortar mix samples),e-mail or fax.

For more detailed Mortar Analyses including XRD, XRF, and Petrographic Analysis we can help you find a lab that will offer those services.

Our custom mortar replication service, allows clients to decide exactly what they want in their lime mortars. We currently work with nine various lime binders (putties, quicklimes, Natural Hydraulic Limes, etc) and have access to a wide variety of sands to match your historic mortar as closely as possible to the original.

We also offer a custom color service ($75.00/sample) in which we match an existing sample to one of our Mix&GO Premium Mortar mixes. The versatility of Virginia Lime Works Mix&GO is unsurpassed. Using our NHLs and a hand picked gradient of sands, they offer a high degree of workability and performance. PLUS, our pigments are weighed out to .1 grams per 1000 lb batch of mortar, so consistency in color is never an issue!

So how does this work?

Well, you can either give us a call to discuss your project or you can send us a sample of your existing mortar to us with your name and contact information and payment information. Please indicate if you would like a "Custom Mortar" which may involve a mortar analysis or if you would like a "Custom Color Match". We will contact you to discuss your options and will send you a sample back for your approval. Upon your approval, we will be more than happy to make your order, whether it is three bags or 20 tons.
