Virginia Lime Works Traditional Limewash

Our limewash is a blend of our traditional wood fired lime putty and water for a completely historic coating. Applied in 6-10 coats, it is available in our standard range or 40 colors and custom colored.  Virginia Lime Works Traditional Limewash can be used on historic brickwork, stonework, and renders.

Application Procedures
Virginia Lime Works Traditional Limewash is designed to be applied to new and historic masonry substrates. Do not apply on over latex, oil based paints, wood, PVC, varnish, or shellac. Clean surface prior to application to remove dust, dirt, grime, grease, or any other coatings or materials that may prevent bonding.  Control substrate’s absorption rate by thoroughly dampening with water until the surface is cool to touch and water droplets take approximately 1-2 seconds to absorb into the background.  Surfaces should not be “glistening wet”.  Do not apply if rain or precipitation is expected for 24 hours after application. Working temperatures for Virginia Lime Works Traditional Limewash are between 45°F and 85°F. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on “hot” surfaces. Protect during and at least 48 hours after application from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. Virginia Lime Works Traditional Limewash occasionally will “dust”, leaving residue on surfaces it has come in contact with.
Application of samples is recommended, and finishes should be evaluated prior to full scale application. Allow 24-48 hours of cure before determinations are made.

Apply with a good quality synthetic bristle brush (i.e. Sherwin-Williams Deck & Siding Brush 4”-6”) and spread thoroughly filling any pores or crevices.  Allow the limewash to begin to absorb into the substrate and then with a dry bristle brush, rub the surface to burnish. Allow 12-24 hours between applications, and apply as many coats to achieve desired finish.

Clean up
Tools should be cleaned (or stored in water) when not in use for periods greater than 15 minutes.
