Virginia Lime Works Patriot MINERALwash
Mineral or Potassium Silicate paints were first developed in Europe in the late 19th century and are known for their vapor permeability and long life. Unlike modern coatings which “lay” on the surface, MINERALwash forms a molecular bond with masonry, such as brick, stone, terracotta, masonry mortars, plasters, and renders. Because of this molecular bond, MINERALwash is an IRREVERSIBLE coating. Only while wet can MINERALwash be removed. Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash is a single component system and is available in the following grades.
MINERALwash- Potassium silicate stain for the staining (or coloring) of masonry without loss of detail
MINERALpaint- General potassium silicate paint system.
MINERALclear- Transparent potassium silicate primer for highly absorbent substrates and for consolidation/protection of masonry substrates
Application Procedures
Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash can be applied to any masonry or plaster substrates. Do not apply on over latex, oil based paints, wood, PVC, latex, varnish, or shellac. Clean surface prior to application to remove dust, dirt, grime, grease, or any other coatings or materials that may prevent bonding. Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash should only be applied to masonry surfaces. Surfaces MUST be dry prior to application. Do not apply if rain or precipitation is expected for 48 hours after application. Working temperatures for Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash are between 45F and 85F. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on “hot” surfaces. Protect during and at least 48 hours after application from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. Whereas Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash molecularly bonds with silica and materials that contain silicates, protect all areas not to be painted thoroughly. Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash will bond irreversibly with glass, so ensure all windows and glass materials are well protected. Once the coating dries it can not be removed. Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash bonds best to porous surfaces, any concrete or “finished” backgrounds (such as poured or finished concrete) may need to be treated to provide this porous background.
Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash should not be diluted whereas chalking may result.
Substrate’s rate of absorption can be controlled by using Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear to the surfaces to be treated. To test the substrate’s rate of absorption apply water droplets to surface to gauge how quickly it is absorbed. High suction will allow the water droplets to absorb and disappear quickly. Low suction will allow the water droplets to bead or lay on the surface. If either of these conditions exists apply Virginia Lime Work MINERALclear by brush or sprayer and allow 12 hours of cure before proceeding. Test the rate of absorption again, and proceed by either applying an additional coat of MINERALclear, if deemed necessary, or by commencing with application of Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash.
Application of samples is recommended, and finishes should be evaluated prior to full scale application. Allow 24-48 hours of cure before determinations are made.
Protect all areas (particularly glass surfaces) prior to application and ensure that the surfaces to be painted are completely dry.
Apply with a short bristle brush and spread thoroughly filling any pores or crevices. The process of brushing can increase the coatings absorption into the substrate resulting in a more durable finish. Allow 12-24 hours between applications, and apply as many coats to achieve desired finish.
Clean up
Tools should be cleaned (or stored in water) when not in use for periods greater than 15 minutes or more. When cured, Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash is insoluble rendering cleaning impossible. While wet, Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash can be cleaned from non-porous surfaces with clean water.
Coverages and Consumption
Coverage will depend upon the rate of absorption and type of substrate in which it is applied. Most substrates will require two coats of Virginia Lime Works MINERALwash. Coverage can be determined on site by testing the coverage of the material on the chosen substrate.
Protect eyes, mucous membranes, and skin from splashing. Work in well ventilated areas.
Store unopened containers away from direct sunlight, between 40-85F. Shelf life is six month in original unopened containers.
Not for internal consumption. Keep out of the reach of children and animals.
