Virginia Lime Works Patriot MINERALclear

Virginia Lime Works Patriot MINERALclear is a transparent potassium silicate primer for highly absorbent substrates and for consolidation/protection of masonry substrates.  Mineral or Potassium Silicate paints were first developed in Europe in the late 19th century and are known for their vapor permeability and long life. Unlike modern coatings which “lay” on the surface, MINERALclear forms a molecular bond with masonry, such as brick, stone, terracotta, masonry mortars, plasters, and renders. Because of this molecular bond, MINERALclear is an IRREVERSIBLE coating. Only while wet can MINERALclear be removed.

Application Procedures
Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear can be applied to any masonry or plaster substrates. Do not apply on over latex, oil based paints, wood, PVC, varnish, or shellac. Clean surface prior to application to remove dust, dirt, grime, grease, or any other coatings or materials that may prevent bonding. Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear should only be applied to masonry surfaces. Surfaces MUST be dry prior to application. Do not apply if rain or precipitation is expected for 48 hours after application. Working temperatures for Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear are between 45°F and 85°F. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on “hot” surfaces. Protect during and at least 48 hours after application from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. Whereas Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear molecularly bonds with silica and materials that contain silicates, protect all areas not to be painted thoroughly. Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear will bond irreversibly with glass, so ensure all windows and glass materials are well protected. Once the coating dries it cannot be removed. Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear bonds best to porous surfaces, any concrete or “finished” backgrounds (such as poured or finished concrete) may need to be treated to provide this porous background.

MINERALclear can be used to control the rate of absorption of masonry substrates.  To test the substrate’s rate of absorption apply water droplets to surface to gauge how quickly it is absorbed. High suction will allow the water droplets to absorb and disappear quickly. Low suction will allow the water droplets to bead or lay on the surface. If either of these conditions exists apply Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear by brush or sprayer and allow 12 hours of cure before proceeding. Repeat process as necessary to control suction.

Application of samples is recommended, and finishes should be evaluated prior to full scale application. Allow 24-48 hours of cure before determinations are made.

Protect all areas (particularly glass surfaces) prior to application and ensure that the surfaces to be painted are completely dry.
Apply with a good quality synthetic bristle brush (i.e. Sherwin-Williams Deck & Siding Brush 4”-6”) and spread thoroughly filling any pores or crevices. The process of brushing can increase the coatings absorption into the substrate resulting in a more durable finish. Allow 12 hours between applications, and apply as many coats to achieve desired finish.

Clean up
Tools should be cleaned (or stored in water) when not in use for periods greater than 15 minutes or more. When cured, Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear is insoluble rendering cleaning impossible. While wet, Virginia Lime Works MINERALclear can be cleaned from non-porous surfaces with clean water.

Coverage and Consumption
Coverage will depend upon the rate of absorption and type of substrate in which it is applied.   Coverage can be determined on site by testing the coverage of the material on the chosen substrate.

Protect eyes, nose, and skin from splashing. Work in well ventilated areas.

Store unopened containers away from direct sunlight, between 40°F-85°F. Shelf life is six months in original unopened containers.

Not for internal consumption. Keep out of the reach of children and animals.
