Application Procedures
Virginia Lime Works Patriot LimePaint is designed to be applied to new and historic masonry substrates and most bare woods. It is not recommended for application over latex on historic brickwork or masonry. Do not apply over oil based paints, PVC, varnish, or shellac. Clean surface prior to application to remove dust, dirt, grime, grease, or any other coatings or materials that may prevent bonding. Do not apply if rain or precipitation is expected for 12 hours after application. Working temperatures for Virginia Lime Works Patriot LimePaint are between 45F and 85F.
Application of samples is recommended, and finishes should be evaluated prior to full scale application. Allow 24-48 hours of cure before determinations are made.
On masonry backgrounds control the substrate’s rate of absorption by misting with water prior to application if necessary.
Patriot LimePaint is supplied as a dry powder, pre-measured in one gallon, two gallon, and five gallon pails and 30lb paper bags. Mixing ration is approximately 2 parts powder to 1 part water. Add ½ amount water required and stir thoroughly using a drill with a paint paddle attachment or a wooden paint stirrer to achieve a thick paste. Then add remaining water to achieve proper consistency. Due to the frothing that can occur during mixing, allow the material to settle for a few hours and add additional water as necessary. Gently stir to combine.
Apply Patriot LimePaint with a good quality synthetic bristle brush (i.e. Sherwin-Williams Deck & Siding Brush 4”-6”), sprayer, or roller. Keep paint from settling by stirring during application.
Clean up
Tools should be cleaned (or stored in water) when not in use for periods greater than 15 minutes.
Coverage and Consumption
Approximate coverage per gallon is 200 -300 square feet per coat. Coverage will depend upon the rate of absorption and type of substrate in which it is applied. Most substrates will require a minimum of two coats of Virginia Lime Works Patriot LimePaint. Application on wood often requires three coats. Coverage can be determined on site by testing the coverage of the material on the chosen substrate.
Protect eyes, nose, and skin from splashing. Work in well ventilated areas.
Unmixed Patriot LIme Paint can be stored in unopened containers away from direct sunlight, between 40-85F for 1 year. Patriot LimePaint should be used within 5 days of mixing with water.
