Virginia Lime Works Traditional Colorwash
Our colorwash is a hand-made mixture of rabbit hide glue, alum, pigment, and water, and is based on historic recipes. This once common material can be found on the exterior of many traditional masonry buildings and was the first line of defense against the elements. Also, in days before pressure washers, acids, and detergents, it was a simple and effective method of cleaning up and unifying historic brickwork. Traditional Colorwash is available in 4 standard colors: Plum, Earth, Chocolate, and Brick. Also available is Virginia Lime Works Pencilling material, a blend of rabbit skin glue, chalk, and water for lining out mortar joints.
Application Procedures
Virginia Lime Works Colorwash is designed to be applied to historic brick masonry. Do not apply on over latex, oil based paints, wood, PVC, varnish, or shellac. Clean surfaces prior to application to remove dust, dirt, grime, grease, or any other coatings or materials that may prevent bonding. Surfaces should be dry prior to application. Do not apply if rain or precipitation is expected for 48 hours after application. Working temperatures for Virginia Lime Works Colorwash are between 45°F and 85°F. Do not apply in direct sunlight or on “hot” surfaces. Protect during and at least 48 hours after application from direct sunlight, wind, and rain. Virginia Lime Works Colorwash bonds best to porous brick. On non-porous brick, dusting may occur.
Application of samples is recommended, and finishes should be evaluated prior to full scale application. Allow 24-48 hours of cure before determinations are made.
Protect all areas prior to application and ensure that the surfaces to be painted are completely dry.
Apply with a good quality synthetic bristle brush (i.e. Sherwin-Williams Deck & Siding Brush 4”-6”) and spread thoroughly filling any pores or crevices. The process of brushing can increase the coatings absorption into the masonry. Allow 12-24 hours between applications, and apply as many coats to achieve desired finish.
STIR COLORWASH WELL BEFORE AND DURING APPLICATION
Clean up
Tools should be cleaned (or stored in water) when not in use for periods greater than 15 minutes.
Coverages and Consumption
Coverage will depend upon the rate of absorption and type of substrate in which it is applied. Most substrates will require a minimum of two coats of Virginia Lime Works Colorwash. Coverage can be determined on site by testing the coverage of the material on the chosen substrate.
Protect eyes, nose, and skin from splashing. Work in well ventilated areas.
Store unopened containers in a cool location, between 40°F-75°F. Virginia Lime Works Traditional Colorwash is made fresh, therefore, due to the use of natural rabbit skin glue, the shelf life is two weeks from the date of purchase in original unopened containers.
