From the beginning Virginia Lime Works has been focused on providing the best products for the restoration of historic masonry. From our first days pitching wood in our wood fired lime kiln to the present day, we have never strayed from our mission of making masonry preservation, simple, sustainable, and “user friendly”. Whether you are looking for traditional wood fired lime putty or a custom colored ready to use mortar, we’ve got a
product for you.

Masonry, Plastering, and other traditional trades originated over 6,000 years. During this time a variety of materials have been used. Clay, Lime, Gypsum, Natural Cement, and Portland Cements can be found in our historic buildings depending on location and era.

The great Pyramids of Egypt were built using gypsum, whereas many of the buildings of the Roman era were built of lime. Lime Mortars and Plasters have been used in most of America's built heritage, as well as clay materials, and natural cements/lime blends.

Generally speaking, some form of lime was used in almost all buildings prior to the 1910s. Portland Cements were patented in the US in 1872, but structures up to the 1940s, 50s, and even the 60s, can be found to be built entirely of lime with no Cement.

Our architectural lineage is so diverse, therefore, it is important to look at each building and determine what may be best for its future. We are here to assist you in determining what products may work for your project to ensure that our built heritage is preserved for generations to come. It's also important that you understand where your materials can be used sucessfully and where, perhaps, they shouldn't be used. A soft lime putty mortar may not hold up so well on a lighthouse in Alaska.

If you are new to historic preservation, take a look at the documents to the left of this page. Hopefully they will give you an insight to why we do what we do. Sure, it might be easier to just run down to the store and get the "same old stuff we always use", but when that "same old stuff" might cause irreversible damage to your building, maybe the easy route's not so easy after all.
